Long ago, the municipality of Amulung had not yet been baptized with its present name, and the different barangays were also unknown to the people of that time. Western Amulung, too, remained undiscovered. These areas were covered with thick forests, full of cogon grass and talahib, with creeks, standing water ponds, and lagoons scattered throughout. The first people to inhabit these lands were the Aetas. Abundant with wild animals, fruits, and root crops, it was a fertile and promising land. One pleasant day, a man from the north stumbled upon these places. Feeling warm and tired on his journey, he decided to rest under a large tree. As he rested, he began to appreciate the beauty of the area and saw its potential for a livestock project. When he returned home, he told his children to bring all their cattle to that place. However, due to the distance, the children couldn’t commute daily. So, they decided to build a shelter for themselves. The boys constructed a four-posted shade, with the front post slightly higher than the back post. This shelter, commonly known as “LAYAG” to most people, served as their refuge during the night. When the children reported back to their father, they referred to the shelter as “LAYAG”. “Is it a Layag?” the father asked. “Yes, Pa,” replied the children, “it’s a Layag.” And so, they named the place “PALAYAG” – “PA” for father and “Layag” for shelter. Thus, the name “PALAYAG” was born, named by its founder.
We envision Barangay Palayag as a community of amenable, well-disciplined, law-abiding, responsible, constructive, and wholesome individuals. It is a community that is virtually and socially refined, honest, peaceful, drug-free, and environmentally concerned.
To ensure that all individuals have equal access to all government services that serve the common good, assistance must be provided to the people of the community to alleviate any suffering or obstacles they may face, ensuring ease of access.
